How to Know It's Time to Seek Back Pain Treatment

Hibu Websites • Oct 15, 2021

A lot of people suffer from back pain, probably more people than you would even realize. In fact, according to the ACA, an estimated 31 million Americans suffer from lower back pain at any point in time. The question is, when do you start seeking real treatment for it? Many of us simply use a warm compress, or perhaps pop an over-the-counter pain medication and move on. But there is a point at which back pain becomes truly debilitating, or perhaps is a sign that there is something more that needs to be medically investigated. With that in mind, let's look into some of the signs that you should seek back pain treatment.

1. If It's Severe

Obviously, you should seek treatment from a doctor if you have severe back pain. Now, everyone's definition of severe is individualized. But generally speaking, if you're having issues going to sleep, moving, or even sitting due to your back pain, you need to think about speaking with a doctor.

2. If It Lasts

Almost everyone experiences back pain from time to time. Additionally, you may have back pain that lasts for a day or two or even a week. But if your back pain persists for two weeks or longer, you need to think about getting an opinion from a medical doctor. This indicates that you may have a serious problem.

3. If It Spreads Throughout Your Body

If your back pain is spreading throughout your body, you need to think about seeking medical advice. Typically, back pain that indicates a serious problem will begin spreading down the rest of your body, including your legs. If the pain spreads below your knee, it's especially concerning.

4. If It Leads to Weakness

If your back pain leads to weakness in your back, like buckling or inability to support your posture, you may be suffering from a more serious medical problem. This weakness may also extend to your legs, which may be highly problematic.

5. If It's Followed By Visual Signs

You may want to get a look at the area in which your back pain has started. If the pain is accompanied by redness or swelling, you should look into a doctor's opinion.

Back pain doesn't mean that you have a serious medical problem. But it can. Either way, it needs to be dealt with by a doctor.
